First edition, first printing. Signed by Washington Senators players Cecil Travis, Roy Sievers, and Wayne Terwilliger on the half-title page. Signed and inscribed by the author to book critic Lee C. Milazzo on the front free endpaper. Publisher's red cloth, with spine stamped in blue; in its original red, white, and blue dust jacket, with baseballs depicted on the front panel, lettered in white. About fine book, with light wear to spine ends, and mild offsetting to rear free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket, with toning to spine, light wear to spine ends, a few small nicks to front panel, faint spotting to panels, and small closed tears to bottom corners of flaps. Overall, a pleasing copy. Cecil Travis spent his entire playing career with the Washington Senators (1933-41, 1945-47), garnering three All-Star selections during that time. His potential Hall of Fame career was cut short by WWII - in 1944, at the Battle of the Bulge, he sustained severe frostbite that nearly required his feet to be amputated. He returned to professional baseball after the war but played just three below-average seasons before retiring. Wayne Terwilliger's MLB career spanned 60 years, as a player, coach, and manager. Notably, he won World Series titles in 1987 and 1991 as a coach with the Minnesota Twins. Roy Sievers was a 5x All-Star and AL rookie of the year (1949). Shirley Povich was a sportswriter and columnist for the Washington Post from 1923 to 1988. He received the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1975 and was inducted into the National Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1984. Item #SPO001
