Publisher's burlap cloth, with green labels to front board and spine, lettered in gilt, and green and white pictorial endpapers; in its original brown publisher's pictorial slipcase, lettered in green. Lacking original glassine dust jacket. About fine book, with light toning to spine and board edges, and very bright gilt; good slipcase, with some toning to spine and covers, a bit of staining to front cover, light rubbing to edges, and a large chip to top edge. Overall, a radiant copy. Wee Gillis tells the story of a Scottish orphan boy (full name: Alastair Roderic Craigellachie Dalhousie Gowan Donny-bristle MacMac) who is torn between living in the lowlands with his mother's family or the highlands with his father's family. To help decide, he spends some time in both regions - raising cows in the lowlands and stalking stags in the highlands. A chance encounter with a bagpiper helps Wee Gillis make his final decision. Wee Gillis earned a Caldecott Honor in 1939 for its striking black and white illustrations. The book was the second collaboration by Leaf and Lawson, their first being the all-time classic, The Story of Ferdinand (1936). Item #MUNL002
