Introduction by Ford Madox Ford. First edition, first printing. One of 926 copies on handmade paper (9 copies were published on green paper). Publisher's red marbled boards, black label to spine lettered in gilt. Very good, with some separation to cloth at front joint, old tape repair to spine, small chip to top right of spine label, and light rubbing to spine ends, edges, corners. Overall, a pleasing copy. Housed in a custom dark blue slipcase. The Sisters is an unfinished story by Conrad, which he started writing in 1895 at the beginning of his literary career. The story was ultimately abandoned at least in part due to negative feedback from Conrad's publishing mentor, Edward Garnett. The fragment contains two distinct sections - the first follows Stephen, a young painter traveling through Europe, and the second focuses on two orphan sisters from Basque Country. In his introduction, author Ford Madox Ford, who collaborated with Conrad on three novels, hypothesizes that Conrad intended for the story to go in a dramatic direction, with Stephen becoming romantically entangled with both sisters, and the sisters' priest-uncle ultimately killing one of the girls.
