Publisher's beige cloth-backed green marbled boards, frontispiece with dry-point portrait of Conrad by Muirhead Bone, paper label to spine; housed in its original green slipcase with paper label to spine. Very good book, with light rubbing to board edges, mild thumbsoiling to spine, tiny wormhole to bottom rear joint, and small mark to center of spine; very good slipcase with light toning to paper label and top margin of front cover, some old tape repair to bottom of slipcase and foot of spine, and some tape residue to bottom of rear cover. Overall, an attractive copy, fresh internally. This volume contains a sketch of Conrad by his friend, Elbridge L. Adams, and a first-hand account of Conrad's funeral by John Sheridan Zelie. According to Adams, he sent a copy of the sketch to Conrad before publishing it, to which Conrad replied, "My view is that this first personal sketch by a friend of mine will become an authority. People will refer to it in the future." In Adams' New York Times obituary, the paper calls him "one of the few friends of the novelist during the later years of his life." Item #JC076
