First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth, lettered in gilt. A very good copy with several small spots and some staining to the cloth, light wear and rubbing to the spine and a former owner pencil inscription to front endpaper. Originally published serially in Harper's Weekly from October 1, 1898 - January 7, 1899, The Awkward Age is a novel that tells the story of Nanda Brookenham, a young society woman trying to find her place in her parents' pretentious social circle. The Awkward Age is written almost entirely in dialogue, which, while it allows for a fast-paced plot, limits contextual character development. Accordingly, each of the novel's ten chapters focuses on one of the members of the Brookenham's clique. This first American edition was published on May 12, 1899, less than a month after the first British edition, published on April 25th of the same year. Item #HJ031
