Inscribed by Lowe on the front free endpaper: "George Lowe. / 1960." Publisher's white and gray boards and blue cloth, with penguin illustrations to the front board in black, lettered in black, aqua top stain, pictorial teal endpapers illustrated with a map of the Arctic; in the original pictorial aqua dust jacket, with illustrations of Arctic peoples and animals to the panels in black, lettered in teal and black. About near fine, with a hint of soiling to the front board and fore edge, minor scratch to the rear board, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some light toning to the spine and panel edges, minor wear to the spine ends, short closed tear to the rear panel, small stain to the front flap. Overall, a very good and pleasing copy. The Arctic Year is Danish Arctic explorer Peter Freuchen and Danish ornithologist Finn Salomonsen's "general impression of arctic nature, its boundaries, its inhabitants and its history." Specifically, the authors provide a month by month account of the natural landscapes and ecosystems of the Arctic, based on their extensive experience in Greenland and other regions of the Far North. The text is illustrated throughout with maps and drawings executed by Petersen under Salomonsen's direction.
