The Hunger Games is the first book in this dystopian trilogy, and takes place in a post-apocalyptic North America, now called Panem, during the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death between teenagers from each of the districts under the control of the tyrannical Capitol. The story focuses on Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers for the Games in place of her younger sister, and must fight to survive while holding onto her humanity. In 2012, The Hunger Games was made into a film of the same name, reaching worldwide popularity as one of the highest-grossing film franchise to be based on young adult books, second only to Harry Potter.
