The Dead Zone, written by Stephen King in 1979, centers around the character Johnny Smith who wakes up from a coma five years after getting into a car accident with the ability to see into the future or past of anyone that he touches. When Johnny touches the hand of the ambitious rising politician Greg Stillson, he sees a future decimated by nuclear holocaust and is forced into action. The Dead Zone was the seventh book written by King and it was nominated for a Locus Award in 1980. It was the first of King's novels to be set in the fictional Castle Rock, which would become the setting for many of his greatest works. In 1983, the book was adapted into a critically acclaimed film directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken.
