The Loch Ness Monster and Others

Hard Cover. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1934. First Edition. Near Fine.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow boards with title in red, map illustration to pastedowns, and frontispiece with purported photograph of Loch Ness Monster. Very good book with some light soiling to cloth, a bit of toning to spine, foxing to text block edges, a gentle lean to spine, and former owner's sticker and inscription to front free endpaper. A very nice and bright copy. The Loch Ness Monster and Others is the first book written about the titular legendary sea creature. The book compiles and analyzes first-hand accounts from witnesses, and various articles of evidence, ultimately concluding that the sea creature does in fact exist. The book also includes a supplementary section that looks into some other recorded sea monster sightings from around the globe. The book was written by Rupert T. Gould, a polymath who served as a lieutenant commander in World War II and was an accomplished horologist (maker of clocks and watches). He published a seminal book on marine chronometers, and also successfully restored a collection of marine chronometers personally created by their inventor, John Harrison. In addition to The Loch Ness Monster, Gould published three other books on unexplained phenomena - Oddities, Enigmas, and The Case for the Sea-Serpent.
