René Magritte. Paris: Le Soleil Noir, 1966. First Edition. Fine.
Illustrated by René Magritte with 7 black and white drawings. First edition, one of 15 artist's copies signed by Magritte. Original publisher's printed wrappers and folding box with four cutouts of a wine glass, dove, pipe and leaf, with a folding tray and bell signed by Magritte inside cover. An excellent copy with only a slight smudge to the front cover; box with some rubbing and light wear to the spine, else fine. The Belgian painter and surrealist was most well-known for taking commonplace, everyday objects and distorting our perceptions of such objects in unusual contexts. Pipes, clouds, bowler hats and green apples are some of Magritte's more familiar subject matter. Published only one year before Magritte's death, Aube à l'antipode, features 7 black and white drawings, typical of Magritte's style including: a key floating in a giant keyhole, a pocket watch on a cloud over the ocean, or his better known painting of a pipe on an easel: "Ceci n'est pas une pipe"
