Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Burns by Alexander Nasmyth, with original tissue guard. First edition thus (Apollo Poets series). Finely bound in full brown morocco, with "Apollo Poets" emblem in gilt to front board, five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, red marbled endpapers, and hidden paintings to all three edges. Near fine, with a bright and clean binding, some spotting to edges of a few pages at front, and very faint tidemark to fore edges of some pages throughout. Overall, a superb copy. The Poetical Works of Robert Burns is a comprehensive collection of works by the Scottish bard, divided into six sections: "Poems," "Epistles," "The Heron Ballads," "Epigrams, Epitaphs, etc.," "Songs and Ballads," and "Poems, Songs, and other Pieces Ascribed to Burns." Known widely as the national poet of Scotland, Burns wrote in standard English as well as in Scottish dialect and was regarded as a one of the forerunners of the Romantic movement.
