The events in this book take place chronologically during the second and third entries in the series - Mary Poppins Comes Back (1935) and Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943). As Travers explains in a note at the beginning of the book, "This is a word of warning for anybody who may be expecting they are in for a fourth visit. [Mary Poppins] cannot forever arrive and depart."
