Mary Poppins is the first book in Traver's eight volume children series featuring the magical English nanny Mary Poppins. The text introduces the Banks family, consisting of two parents, a son, a daughter, and two twin infants. When their nanny quits, Mary Poppins is blown in to their home at 17 Cherry Lane in London by a strong East Wind. Although their new caretaker is stern and often irritable, the Banks children soon realize Mary Poppins' magical qualities, and the group embarks on a series of fantastical adventures, including traveling to a star in the Pleiades, among others. The story ends with Poppins, satisfied with her effect on the Banks children, departs via the West Wind. In 1964, Mary Poppins was adapted into a film of the same name, produced by Walt Disney and starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
