With frontispiece and cover in color by George Gibbs. First edition, first impression. Publisher's pale blue boards, with portrait of Anne to front board, and gilt lettering to front board and spine. Very good, with light soiling to cloth, a small area of dark spotting to rear board with a tiny spot of white paint, light rubbing to portrait on front board, a touch of rubbing to spine ends, some pencil notes by previous owner to front free endpaper, light offsetting to front endpapers, light offsetting to pp. 160-161, and a tiny bookseller sticker to rear pastedown. Overall, a sturdy and attractive copy of Montgomery's sequel to Anne of Green Gables (1908). Anne of Avonlea takes place just after the conclusion of Anne of Green Gables and follows Anne Shirley through the next phase of her life - from age 16 to 18. In this volume, Anne teaches at the Avonlea school, helps her guardian Marilla raise Davy and Dora - twins that Marilla takes in after their mother dies, and organizes A.V.I.S. (Avonlea Village Improvement Society). At the end of the novel, Anne and her friend Gilbert make plans to attend Redmond College. The first of a number of sequels to Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea was published just one year after Anne of Green Gables. Item #LMM007
