A Sport and a Pastime follows the tragic relationship between twenty-year-old Philip Dean, an American Yale dropout, and Ann-Marie, a young French shop assistant. Set in 1960s France, the story is recounted by an unreliable narrator who admits to interjecting his own sexually explicit fantasies into the telling. Published in 1967, the book was immediately regarded as a modern classic, and it has continued to receive critical acclaim. In 2017, Guardian writer Sarah Hall wrote, "Since its publication in 1967, during the decade of sexual revolution, A Sport and a Pastime has set the standard not only for eroticism in fiction, but for the principal organ of literature - the imagination."
