In 1897, London traveled to the Yukon to participate in the Klondike Gold Rush, an experience that inspired many of his novels and short stories. The story "Bâtard," first published in The Cosmopolitan in 1902, is about a hate-filled relationship between a wolfdog and his master, and was a notable predecessor to London's masterpieces The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906).
