Overall, an attractive copy. Wise 21. Twixt Land & Sea is a collection of three seafaring short stories by Conrad: "A Smile of Fortune," "Freya of the Seven Seas," and "The Secret Sharer." The last is generally regarded as one of Conrad's best shorter works, second only to Heart of Darkness (1899). It tells the story of a sea captain who hides and protects a stowaway who murdered a man on another ship. The story has strong psychological elements, with the identities of the captain and the stowaway overlapping in surreal and supernatural ways. Just one year after the publication of Twixt Land & Sea, Conrad achieved long-overdue fame and commercial success with his novel, Chance (1913). Item #JC083
