Diamonds are Forever

Marriott, Pat. Hard Cover. London: Jonathan Cape, 1956. First Edition. Near Fine / Dust Jacket Included.

First edition, first printing, in Gilbert's Binding A. Publisher's black cloth, ruled in blind with a repeating diamond pattern, stamped in silver with a diamond motif to front board, lettered in silver to spine; plain white endpapers, in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Pat Marriott, featuring the chin, shoulders, and torso of Tiffany Case, dressed in a black, low-cut dress and wearing a large pear-shaped diamond pendant, over a black background. About fine with a slight lean to spine, toning to top edge of text block, and a faint gray mark to the fore edge; in a very good dust jacket with light wear to extremities and chipping to spine ends, front fold with a split extending down from top edge, front panel with some faint foxing, rear panel with a few small stains, verso of spine ends with tape repairs. Overall, a beautiful copy of this scarce book. Gilbert A4a (1.1) Diamonds are Forever follows British Secret Service agent James Bond from Sierra Leone to the United States in an attempt to thwart an illegal diamond smuggling trade. Although he was an English citizen, Fleming's "familiarity with many aspects of American life, shiny and shady, gives cold actuality to the most exciting and ingenious story he has written." It was adapted into a film of the same name starring Sean Connery as Bond in 1971. Notably, Fleming's background research for this novel, specifically the interviews he conducted with the International Diamond Security Organisation, ultimately formed the basis for his later non-fiction work The Diamond Smugglers.
