[Montgomery, AL]: 9 August 2005. Fine.
Signed by Lee as "Nelle". Single leaf of Lee's monogramed cream stationery, written in Lee's hand on both sides in black; with the original envelope, written in Lee's hand in black. Fine letter; envelope with some wear where opened and a few minor scuffs. Overall, a very warm and pleasing letter. In this letter, Harper Lee writes to her friend fellow Alabamian Bruce Higginson. Like Lee, Higginson relocated to New York City in his adult years and lived in the same Yorkville neighborhood. When Lee was away from New York and after relocating to Monroeville, Higginson kept Lee abreast of local neighborhood news and mailed her various New York newspapers. In her letter, Lee thanks Higginson for his friendship and for his graceful assumption of the financial burden of constantly mailing newspapers to her. She writes, "You will go bankrupt sending me the papers - your financial ruin has made one old lady most happy!"
