The Canterbury Tales of Chaucer and Chaucer's Romaunt of the Rose, Troilus and Creseide and the Minor Poems

Hard Cover. London: William Pickering, 1830-1846, 1830. Fine.

Eight volumes. Finely bound by Riviere in three-quarter maroon polished calf over marbled boards, matching marbled endpapers and pastedowns. A fine set with only some traces of rubbing and a few very slight signs of wear to the extremities, else very fine and extremely clean. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 14th century short stories concerning the story-telling contest of a group of travelling pilgrims written in Middle English during the Hundred Years' War. This edition is taken from the translation of 18th century English classical scholar Thomas Tyrwhitt. It is Tyrwhitt's edition, originally published in 1775 that is still regarded as a landmark and among the finest in Chaucer editorial practice.
