A Backward Glance is Wharton's memoir in which she discusses both her private life and writing career. While any author's biography provides insight into his or her writing by contextualizing it within their personal history, the autobiographical nature of Wharton's work makes this text especially insightful. Indeed, the publisher agrees that "Mrs. Wharton's work has always been her life, and through her work, she has won a place as one of the greatest of contemporary writers."
