With Trumpet and Drum

Price: $650.00

Hard Cover. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. Limited. Near Fine.

First edition, limited issue of 250 copies signed by the publisher. Inscribed by Field with a manuscript copy of the poem "At the Door" on a leaf adhered to the front free endpaper. Publisher's quarter white vellum and pale blue paper boards, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Near fine, with some light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the boards, short split to the top edge of the front hinge, otherwise tight binding, bright and fresh interior. Housed in a custom quarter teal morocco and blue cloth slipcase with matching chemise, along with Little Willie (BAL 5679) and An Imitation of Robert Herrick (Blanck Vol. 3, page 129). A beautiful copy, inscribed with a manuscript poem. BAL 5750 This copy of With Trumpet and Drum includes Field's autograph copy of his poem "At the Door," which is printed in this collection on pages 74-75. Notably, the autograph poem is dated "Chicago, 1884," which precedes the publication of this volume by nearly a decade. Interestingly, despite the amount of time between them, the 1884 autograph edition and the 1892 print edition of "At the Door" only slightly in punctuation, with the text of the verse being entirely the same. With Trumpets and Drum is Field's first collection of children's poems. Specifically, it includes "The Sugar Plum Tree," "Wynken, Blynken and Nod," "Little Boy Blue," and "The Bell-Flower Tree," among others. Notably, in addition to his own original verse, Field includes several borrowed lullabies and folk-songs from various cultures, including Norway, Judaism, the Netherlands, and Armenia, among others.
