The Man Who Died is a short novel that was first published in Paris in 1929 under the title The Escaped Cock. A meditation on resurrection, this novella tells the story of a man who is raised from the dead and witnesses a rooster attempting to free himself from his restraint. Throughout the story, this protagonist, a representation of Jesus Christ and the Egyptian god Osiris, travels in search of a meaning for human existence, which he discovers at a Temple of Isis in Lebanon.
