Finely bound in contemporary brown mottled calf, five raised bands to spines, compartments decorated in gilt, dark brown morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, text block edges red, blue and red marbled endpapers. About very good with some wear to extremities, some hinges starting in Vol. I and II, still generally sturdy, interior very clean. Duclos' first serious publication, Histoire de Louis XI is a straightforward, non-fiction account of the life of King Louis XI. Known as "Louis the Prudent", Louis XI served as King of France from 1461 to 1483. Duclos, a writer and historian, was a member of the Académie Française, and a fellow of the Royal Society of London.
