Hard Cover. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1933. Very Good / Dust Jacket Included.
Twentieth printing [first printing 1932]. Publisher's yellow cloth stamped in red, top edge stained red, in the red and black pictorial dust jacket. A very good copy with light rubbing to extremities and a slight lean to spine, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, publisher's pamphlet laid in; in a very good dust jacket with some wear to extremities and chipping to spine ends and folds, ¾" chip to rear panel near foot of spine, price slug blacked out with marker. A nice example of an art deco dust jacket. Set in Holland during World War I, The Fountain follows the protagonist, a British officer, as he engages in an affair with the wife of a German soldier. At the time of publication, The Fountain was a best-seller and generated much interest among readers and critics for its beautifully written prose. This edition was printed as part of the Borzoi Dollar Library series, a promotional tool used by Alfred A. Knopf to advertise their books as desirable and affordable.
