Illustrated by John Leech, John Tenniel, Clarkson Stanfield, and Frank Stone. First edition, first printing. Finely bound in late nineteenth century red morocco and marbled paper-covered boards, five raised bands to spine, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. Very good, with some wear to spine ends, joints, and corners, light rubbing to boards, light soiling to some pages, and newspaper article excerpt on Dickens affixed to verso of front free endpaper. Overall, attractive and finely bound. Smith II, 9. The Haunted Man is the fifth and final volume in Dickens' Christmas Books series. Like A Christmas Carol (1843), the first novella in the series, it focuses on the Christian spirit of Christmas rather than the holiday itself. Specifically, The Haunted Man tells the story of a lonely professor who is haunted by the sorrows of his past until he's visited by a spectral version of himself. Item #CD172
