New York: The Macmillan Company, 1945. 1st Edition. Near Fine.
First edition, first printing. Publisher's light gray cloth, lettered in red. About near fine, with some wear and minor fraying to the spine ends, toning to the spine, bright boards, fresh interior. Overall, a clean and pleasing copy. Twilight Bar, the first and only play by Hungarian-British author Arthur Koestler, tells the story of how the people of Earth must defend their planet by proving their happiness to extraterrestrial invaders who intend to otherwise exterminate them. As the author explains in his preface, Koestler first wrote Twilight Bar in 1933 while living in Moscow as a member of the Communist Party. From July-August 1944, after renouncing his Communist affinities, Koestler rewrote the play while living in Slaugham, Sussex- calling this the "second version," despite its being the true first edition as the original version of the text was never published.
