Overall, a gorgeous copy of this ever-relevant masterpiece. One of the classic 20th century dystopian novels, Brave New World tells the story of Huxley's envisioned future for modern society: a totalitarian regime in which individuality has been replaced by conditioned uniformity and free thinking is suppressed with constant, mindless entertainment enhanced by government sanctioned recreational, mood-altering drugs. When this future "utopia" is breached by a "savage" who was raised without modern luxury, Huxley exposes that, while the future has secured the happiness and general well-being of all members of society, the meaning of life has been lost in the process. The title "Brave New World" puts an ironic spin on an idealistic line from Shakespeare's The Tempest (Act V, Scene I): "O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in 't." Item #AH030
