In the story, a mortuary priest named Imhotep comes home with a new concubine, which sets off a chain of perplexing deaths. Death Comes as the End is the only novel written by Christie that is not set in the 20th century and one of the few that does not feature European characters. It is one of the first historical mystery novels ever written. Christie had a lot of exposure to Egyptology, as she was married to the successful archaeologist Max Mallowan who frequently made trips to the Middle East. She began working on the novel at the urging of her Egyptologist friend, Stephen Glanville. In an Observer review of the book, author and critic Maurice Richardson wrote, "my insensate admiration for her leaps even higher."
