Book Fairs Around the World
Virginia Woolf once said, “Odd how the creative power at once brings the whole universe to order.” She may have been speaking of the creativity that manifests while writing a novel, but perhaps she was referring to the power of print itself. Books bring us together; they unite the world. From monthly book clubs to signing events by authors, books are the muse for gatherings, discussion, and debate. Similarly, book fairs have the ability to bring bibliophiles together across miles, young and old, professionals and novices. Today, many US book fairs celebrate decades of existence, but new fairs and antiquarian shows are also starting up all around the world.
Here are just a few examples of up-and-coming, first-ever book fairs:
• 1st Annual Book Fair and Cultural Arts Festival ~ Manor, TX – 10/6/07. This festival features storytellers, authors, and cultural exhibitions, and is sponsored by the Manor Literacy and Cultural Initiative.
• 1st Annual International Antiquarian Book Fair ~ Hong Kong, China – 11/30 – 12/2. Held on Hong Kong’s harbor front, this is the first book fair to ever visit this location. The Western book market will be well-represented, along with book dealers hailing from China, Japan, and Korea.
• Book Fair in Rye, United Kingdom – 12/1/07. Although Rye has not seen a book fair for some time, December 1st will welcome dealers both locally and from London and Kent.
Book fairs celebrating specific genres are also becoming increasingly popular:
• Art Book Fair ~ New York, NY – (held 9/28/07 – 9/30/07.) Over 120 publishers, booksellers, and antiquarian dealers, including ARTFORUM, sell art books and catalogues, periodicals and magazines.
• Children’s Book Fair ~ Bologna, Italy – (held 4/24/07 – 4/27/07.) This international event educates attendees on trends and business opportunities available in the field of children’s literature. Deemed “a unique cultural experience,” the fair attracts publishers, literary agents, and licensing developers, and has been running for 45 years.
B & B is on the move!
We are expanding further into French literature and will also be located in Aix-en-Provence, France from September 1st through the end of January 2008. Aix-en-Provence, 25 km north of Marseille, has a rich history in literature and the arts. Once home to Paul Cézanne and Émile Zola, it now hosts monthly antiquarian book shows which are part of the best markets in Provence.
