One-page bifolium. Flattened folds, some scattered spots of toning and light soiling, else very good. Beautifully framed and matted. One-page letter from Hawthorne to his son Julian's teacher regarding his education. Written one year before the author's death: "My Dear Sir,/ I thank you for the letter/ which you have so kindly written,/ defining Julian's progress in/ his studies, and am grateful/ that you find it possible to say/ so much good of him - a great/ part of which, I am sure, must be owing to your own beneficial influence over your pupil." Julian Hawthorne, the second of three children, was 17 years old and attending Harvard College at the time. Hawthorne was writing to James Russell Lowell, who was giving Julian private tutoring lessons in German. Julian himself would go on to become a writer and journalist. Item #NH032
