Madeline. Ludwig Bemelmans.

Madeline

Hard Cover. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1939. First Edition. Very Good / Dust Jacket Included.

Illustrated by Bemelmans. First edition first printing. Original publisher's paper-covered illustrated boards in a matching illustrated first issue dust jacket. Very good with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, some chipping to the spine; in an unclipped jacket with some light wear and rubbing the edges, light soiling and some reinforcement to the verso. A very good copy. This beloved children's story is the first in a series of eleven books featuring the young protagonist Madeline. Set in a Catholic boarding school in Paris, the story begins when Madeline is rushed to the hospital with a ruptured appendix. After Madeline recuperates and returns to school, the other children are fascinated by her scar, endearingly hoping that they might also have their appendixes taken out. Although Bemelmans published other books, Madeline remains his best-known work. Notably, Bemelmans authored only the first six books in the Madeline series; after his death, the story was kept alive through five more books published by his grandson, John Bemelmans Marciano. Madeline was awarded the Caldecott Honor in 1940, and remains a classic in the genre of children's literature.
