Cliff Wright. Hard Cover. London: Bloomsbury, 1999. First Thus. Fine.
English deluxe edition. One of 7,500 copies. Publisher's blue boards stamped in gilt, upper cover with color illustration by Cliff Wright, all edges gilt, green marker ribbon. An about fine copy, with just a touch of bowing to boards, bookmark ribbon slightly frayed, else fine, sturdy and bright. The English deluxe editions were created by Bloomsbury to cater to the gift market. By the time the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, was published, the Harry Potter series was well established, cementing itself in publishing history. As explained by Nigel Newton of Bloomsbury, the need for gift editions of Harry Potter was self-explanatory: "…if you think of any of the great children's classics, there would tend to be a really nice edition. Harry Potter deserves it more than anything we've ever published." Although the exact date of publication is uncertain, it is thought that the first deluxe editions of Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner were all published on the same date, likely September 27th, 1999.
