The Deerslayer is the fifth and final novel in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, a series of books set in the second half of the 18th century and focused on the travels and adventures of the young frontiersman Natty Bumppo. The Deerslayer, though it was written last, serves as a prequel to the other four novels, and follows Bumppo as he strives to protect his adoptive Native American community from harm. Notably, Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales received largely mixed responses from the critical community; the books are the subject of Mark Twain's 1895 essay "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses," but remain popular, and have been adapted for a number of films since the early 20th century.
