Arabian Nights, also known as One Thousand and One Nights, is a collection of fairy tales and stories, some of which date back to Persia in the 900's AD. There have been several publications throughout history, and new stories have been added over time. This volume contains some of the most well-known, including the stories of Scheherazade, Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad the Sailor. Virginia Frances Sterrett (1900-1931) was an American artist and illustrator. Though she illustrated only three books before her death from tuberculosis at age 31, she is remembered for her delicate and fantastical style, which she executed with little formal training. Her illustrations for Arabian Nights convey the wonder and beauty that was imagined by each tale's original storyteller in their descriptions of far-off land and magical beings. Indeed, these illustrations remain her most well-known.
