Fine Binding. London : Chez Nourse & P. Elmsly, dans le Strand, 1776. Very Good.

12mo. [iii-xlix], [1], 438p. [with] Le Nouveau Testament, c'est-à-dire, la nouvelle alliance de Notre Seigneur Jesus-Christ. Nouvelle édition, revue et corrigée. Amsterdam : 1762. [with] Les Pseaumes de David, Mis en Rime Françoise par Clement Marot et Theodore de Beze. Réduits nouvellement à une brieve & facile méthode pour apprendre le Chant ordinaire de l'Eglise. Amsterdam: 1762. Green velvet binding, with silver edges, two silver clasps to fore-edge, and many silver decorations to boards: upper and lower covers each have four hearts to the corners and a central oval with an etching of a bird and flowers, yellow patterned endpapers. About very good, velvet rubbed and lightly torn at hinges but spine neatly reglued, with clasps intact and all silver decorations present; interior hinges have been reinforced, some rubbing to edges and light foxing to first few leaves including the first title and last few leaves, interior else rather clean and bright, lacking blanks and half-title, but with table and calendars. Overall, a unique contemporary binding, remarkably intact and well-preserved. ESTC T140856. The Book of Common Prayer, as well as the New Testament and Psalms of David, printed in French, have been bound together in a charming green velvet binding, complete with its silver decorations and clasps. Velvet bindings with metal clasps were popular during the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. They are beautiful but not very durable, and are therefore commonly seen heavily worn and with missing ornaments and clasps. This binding is a remarkable survivor, boasting all of its decorations and working clasps.
