Presentation copy; signed and inscribed by Steinbeck on the front endpaper: "For assorted Barclays(?)/ with so many/ thanks for everything/ John Steinbeck/ The Cottage Discove, Bruton/ Somerset 1959." Very good with wear and rubbing to extremities, some staining to bottom edge; in a supplied first printing jacket with some light wear and a few short tears, and some early tape reinforcement to verso. Steinbeck took a long break to move to Somerset, England from late 1956-1959 to gain greater inspiration for hus manuscript, Morte d'Arthur. Steinbeck's stay at the Cottage Discove allowed him to focus on his interest in medieval literature and the writings of Sir Thomas Malory. Somerset, the county in southern England, is where King Arthur is said to have lived. (Reef, 123-124).
