[Henry James & Edith Wharton]. Lemaitre, Jules.

Chateaubriand

Hard Cover, Paris: Calmann-Levy, 1912. Very Good.

From the library of Henry James, bearing his ownership signature and the notation “from E. W. May, 1912”. Also contains pencil marks (lines, checkmarks, question marks) and a few notes to margins of text. Moderate rubbing to boards, corners worn, splitting to leather on spine hinges, light soiling to top edge, interior tight and clean. Housed in a custom quarter calf folding case. This book was a gift from Edith Wharton, sent to James while he was living in London and she was living in Paris. The transfer of this volume is recorded in correspondence from James to Wharton, dated May 12, 1912: “Your beautiful envoi a few days since of the 2 lemon-coloured volumes, Loti & Lemaitre, which I am so gratefully ravished to have (the eternal readability of everything about Chateaubriand—he, of old, so admirably constructed & elaborated to be endlessly & richly unexhaustedly exposed!) shines with a still ampler grace than what, in it, meets the mere eye, or even the mere mind. This volume exists as evidence of the enduring literary legacy left behind by James and Wharton, two Americans living, reading and writing abroad. It is an outstanding association that represents the collegiality, correspondence, and friendship of these famed, accomplished writers. Powers, Lyall H. [editor]. Henry James and Edith Wharton. Letters: 1900-1915.
