First edition. One of 2000 copies. Original publisher's blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Wood-engraved title-page vignette of Thoreau's hut, chart of Walden Pond, and 8-page publisher's catalogue dated June, 1854. The Bibliography of American Literature states that the ads are inserted "the varying dates of no known bibliographical significance," it is still preferable to have ads that are dated prior to publication (August 9, 1854). A few very minor stains to covers, spine ends lightly worn with minor chipping. Internally, very clean with a few scattered spots of foxing and a stain to the upper corner of the first several leaves, early pencil notation to front flyleaf noting, "Choice Copy, 1st ed." A completely unsophisticated and bright copy without any repair or restoration. Housed in a custom folding case.
